Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has significantly escalated his rhetoric against the new Syrian government stating that he will not allow it to deploy any forces on its territory south of the capital of Damascus. He seems to be setting the groundwork for creating a permanent buffer zone on Syrian territory and potentially partitioning that territory off indefinitely. The Syrian government had been loudly signalling that it wanted to avoid conflict with Israel. This is now putting it in an impossible situation where it needs to defend the sovereignty of the country but is ruling over a completely destroyed and immiserated state with no capacity to do so. The likely outcome is increasing Turkish control and influence over Syria including through the possible establishment of military bases to at least contain further Israeli incursions. A peace treaty with the SDF/PKK would help lay the gorundwork for this. https://apnews.com/article/israel-syria-buffer-zone-military-netanyahu-6a107f835d4262b56551ad940a5144d7
