Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

Most of my friends work in the service industry. I tip 15-20% depending on the situation.

Ironically, the people I've met who micromanage or fully withhold tips are the people who take up 90% of service staff's time — usually over things that are nitpicky displays of power.
