Any recommendations for a NAS? No big requirements. Happy to dive into technical rabbit holes. Looking to start with a 5-10TB raid setup. I'm the absolute worst hoarder of photos/videos and refuse to delete anything, so I'd like to setup a more permanent storage setup. Currently, I just have random drives lying around :(

Synology if you want something that just works, otherwise the most common rabbit hole is TrueNAS operating system + power efficient motherboard + chassis + planning ahead for ZFS file system. Both ask you to bring your own drives. The former being more flexible while the latter being more mature of a file system.

Cursory Reddit research tells me they have some security vulnerabilities and that the UI is not as friendly as Synology. The latter I can easily believe, the former statement I would dive deeper into and see how true it is and if more robust networking can be a remedy. But also being lesser known of the two brands means less support and text artifacts to dig through for when things go wrong. I like supporting up and comers but maybe not with my most value data!
