has been something I've dreamed of for a long time but recently have been feeling cynical about it — seems like there is something fundamental about the virtual that favors the global over local I'd love to be proven wrong and it's likely worth swimming upstream even if this is true but also open to the idea of just leaning into this in my own life and admitting that my virtual world does offer the same social fabric as my meatspace trying to build analog of our embodied lives in virtual world might not be the way tho

my point was more that maybe taking this skeuomorphic approach where you try to recreate IRL in the virtual is not fruitful and it's better to just lean into the much more chaotic cybernetic virtual reality of unfathomable large network structures and then barbell that with deep embodied offline relationships vs trying to recreate the later in the former

oh yes i totally agree a big advantage that the internet has over meatspace is the sheer number of people you suddenly have access to the current iteration of social platforms have been wildly successful at connecting people with content they like. but content is extremely ephemeral - even disposable to an extent i think i'm dreaming about something built on top of the content layer that is better at connecting people with conversations, ideas, and ultimately other people. it's a bit more abstract than content, which will probably always be the atomic unit that social platforms are build on top of
