a couple years into WWI Britian was losing over a half a million tons of cargo per month due to German uboats and it was becoming a decisive factor in the war the Admiralty had been reluctant to use convoy based on bad assumptions (defensive vs offensive objective, delays, port congestion, convoys are an easier target) eventually they setup a Statistical Department that took a mathematical look and came to the conclusion that all the assumptions were wrong they began convoying with tremendous success would highly recommend this book which is filled with fascinating historic applications of math and stats (submarine warfare in WWII and the roll of sonar + radar included) https://www.amazon.com/Pleasures-Counting-T-W-K%C3%B6rner/dp/0521568234
