AMA stands for "Ask Me Anything," which is a popular internet slang term. It's often used on social media platforms, Reddit, and other online communities to invite people to ask questions on a particular topic or to an expert/expertise. In an AMA session, the host (usually an expert or someone with unique experiences) answers questions from the audience, providing insights, sharing knowledge, and engaging in conversations. AMAs can be about anything, such as science, art, technology, or even personal stories. Some popular platforms for AMAs include: - Reddit (r/IAmA) - Twitter (using the #AMA hashtag) - Instagram Live - YouTube Live - Discord If you have a specific topic or question in mind, feel free to ask me anything! I'll do my best to provide helpful and accurate information.

The Manta Ray’s Filtration System Manta rays feed by capturing with their mouth a mix of seawater and plankton as they swim. The mixture strikes a filter, causing the plankton to bounce into the manta ray’s throat, where it is swallowed as food. The water keeps moving through the filter and is flushed through the manta ray’s gills. However, manta rays can filter out plankton that is much smaller than their filter openings. According to science journalist Ed Yong, this ability is “a feat that should have been impossible.” Consider: The ray’s filtering system looks like five arches, which resemble double-sided combs. Some of the combs’ teeth, or lobes, angle forward and some backward. These lobes separate the seawater, forcing some to flow above the lobes and some to flow between the lobes, creating tiny whirlpools. When plankton or other food particles strike the leading edge of the lobes, they rebound into the faster moving stream and end up in the ray’s throat, where they can be swallow…

WAS IT DESIGNED? The Shell of the Diabolical Ironclad Beetle The diabolical ironclad beetle (Phloeodes diabolicus) lives in western North America. According to researchers, this beetle can withstand a load of about 39,000 times its own body weight and can even survive if run over by a car. How can this beetle bear up under so much pressure? The top and bottom sections of the beetle’s shell join at ridges along each side. One type of ridge firmly resists deformation when compressed, protecting vital organs. Another type is less stiff, allowing more easily for deformation. A third type of ridge allows the beetle’s shell surface to shift. The flexibility of this third type of ridge allows the insect to squeeze under tree bark or hide between tight rock crevices.

Throughout the pregnancy, some of the cells migrate—individually or in groups—from certain areas of the embryo to other areas. Other cells group together and form sheets or fold over into cords or cavities. These processes require remarkable coordination. For example, at one point, sheets of cells curl themselves into little tubes. This happens simultaneously in various places throughout the embryo. The tubes then begin to lengthen and branch out, eventually joining to produce a complete circulatory network. By the time a healthy baby is born, its hundreds of billions of cells have all specialized into the correct type, in the correct location, and at the correct time. What do you think? Did the cell’s ability to specialize evolve? Or was it designed?

WAS IT DESIGNED? A Mother’s Milk“ Infant formula milk will never completely mimic human milk,” states a reference book for midwives. One of the reasons a mother’s milk is ideal for her baby is because her body changes it in a way that matches an infant’s needs. Consider: Mother’s milk changes from the beginning to the end of each feeding session. The milk at the beginning of a feeding has more protein, vitamins, minerals, and water, whereas the milk later in the feeding has more fat, leaving the infant satisfied. Her milk even changes based on the baby’s age and the season. In mother’s milk, the amount of some hormones, such as melatonin, peaks during the night, whereas other hormones peak during the day. Depending on the time of day, these hormonal variations promote sleepiness or alertness, which help the infant establish a sleep/wake cycle. During the first few days after giving birth, the mother produces a yellowish milk called colostrum. Colostrum is easy to digest and is concentra…

Trillions Spent for War—What Is the Real Cost? The cost of war is enormous. “Global military spending hits record $2.2 trillion amid multiple wars.”—The Washington Post, February 13, 2024. The cost includes much more than money. Consider just one example: The war in Ukraine. Soldiers. By some estimates, almost 500,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded since the war began two years ago. Civilians. More than 28,000 have died or been injured, according to the United Nations. However, a senior UN official stated: “The full lasting toll of this devastating war on the civilian population is beyond measure.” The cost in human suffering as a result of war and conflict around the world is immense. 114 million. The number of people displaced by war and violence worldwide as of September 2023. 783 million. The number of people facing chronic hunger. “Conflict is still the biggest driver of hunger, with 70 percent of the world’s hungry people living in areas afflicted by war and viol…
