5 facts about Van Gogh's "Starry Night" (1889) β¨ π The painting was painted in the psychiatric clinic of Saint-Remy, where the artist went after the episode with the ear. Van Gogh looked at the sky through the bars, and it looked like this. π The artist himself considered his masterpiece a failure. He wrote to Theo that the stars were "too big" and his "distortion experiments had failed." π A year earlier, another "Starry Night" was created, known as the "Starry Night over the Rhone". π There is a theory that in this work Van Gogh depicted the most complex concept of turbulence. π It is already known that Van Gogh was interested in astronomy, and saw photographs of the Andromeda galaxy, first taken in 1887-88. Probably, consciously or subconsciously, the artist was inspired by the "spiral nebulae" when painting the painting. Did you know all the facts? Share it in the comments π
