I definitely believe in second chances for people. But you need to be open about your mistakes and let others have the ability to make the judgements for themselves. People will usually respect you for that. It is itself a demonstration of growth. There are also certain things you can't come back from, at least for a specific role, function, or capacity. That is normal and proper as well.
