Taken at face value it isn’t absurd. California has the world’s 5th largest GDP. Our federal government socializes those gains across other states, which is suboptimal for a state of our size.

By this argument Paris should secede from France. And by induction after NY and California leave, the next most productive state should leave, and the one after that, till all 50 have gone their separate ways. It is absurd, and reveals a total lack of loyalty.

I don’t think it’s a lack of loyalty. The reality is that the modern state is a construct of many smaller city states, which have been the norm for thousands of years. Periodically evaluating the current political structures is a useful exercise, even if you disagree with this specific conclusion.

Why is loyalty valuable? Why do I owe a political entity that has perpetually violated the social contract any loyalty?
