Thanks, it seems that the absence of rules is the main disadvantage of the app to me, but it's a nice every day brain and memory training that made well, for a reason it's a big company with $11B Market cap.
I didn't start learning a language from scratch but I retain almost forgotten languages from A1 level☺️

For German, I have a grammar with exercises. It is a book. 
For the other languages, I google it. Sometimes ask friends. 
But I use Duolingo more as a game and to practice. The only language I’m learning from scratch is Chinese. And it only gives you an idea of the language.
