History and sensible defaults. General end users, when LS was made it was the eq. of Finder or Explorer, don't want to see hidden files or dotfiles. Couple that with the ability for your dotfiles to override the behavior it doesn't really make sense.

ux — what would be the point of "hidden" files when they're shown by default?

my guess is to prevent noobs from messing with system files?

i default to `ls -lha` fwiw
