having to code switch between DD/MM for UK life and MM/DD for US work is cruel and unusual, yes! especially when MM/DD is self-evidently superior.

yyyy-mm-dd also has the advantage that it cannot be mistaken for a different date in a different format. If I told you that my friend's birthday is on 02/11/1994, you might not be sure if it's Feb 11 or Nov 2. But 1994-02-11 is unambiguous.
