TED offered a vision of the world where complex societal issues could be solved with a lightbulb moment and a well-designed PowerPoint presentation. Climate change? There's an app for that. Poverty? A social entrepreneur with a TED talk has it figured out. It was a worldview that flattered millennials' sense of ourselves as changemakers while conveniently ignoring the systemic barriers to real change. https://www.joanwestenberg.com/ted-talks-the-picotop-of-millennial-pop-intellectualism

Was on a crew for one TEDx event… was setup as virtue signal entertainment; also a great hack by the parent org to get us all to volunteer while they took in ticket rev

I miss the talks that were entertainment oriented like Rives 4AM talk back in 2007: https://www.ted.com/talks/rives_the_4_a_m_mystery?language=en&subtitle=en

My memory may be failing me. But I started following TED Talks around 2006, and unless I was too naive to notice it back then, there was no call to action then. I remember these talks as amazing testimonies from people who had something to share. I think the call to action came later, and this is what changed everything.
