I saved 95% on fees converting fiat to ETH using Base. 

USDC on Coinbase > USDC to Base EOA > Base USDC to Base ETH = $0.29 in fees (gas spike)

That's down from ~$6 on Coinbase's app.

DCA'ing into ETH didn't make sense for small buys. It makes much more sense now.

Was that a USDC transfer direct to Base chain on your CB wallet or did you buy USDC direct from the wallet? In that case, how do you control which chain it is sent to?
