I think we all lose out a bit by leaving creators to become an entire all-in-one production/distribution house by themselves with minimal support available.

On a related note: I’ve always believed it is fundamentally wrong that humans who’ve achieved professional-level skills in an art form are structurally coerced into selling the best hours of their day to “earn a living” instead of using that time for their own creative work. 

That's a huge collective loss to everyone who appreciates art, writing, music, etc.

Agreed. But I'll also admit that I've been resisting this particular systemic pattern my entire adult life (I'm GenX) in various ways, and I don't expect things to change significantly in my lifetime. 

Wish I had something more hopeful to say about it.

A big loss, and I think that's why a lot of us are burnt out. It shouldn't be this way.

Indeed. To be clear, I apply the same ethical standard across the board. I think it's fundamentally wrong that *any* human being is structurally coerced (out of lack of viable alternatives) into selling their time to “earn a living." 

I just think it's especially egregious in the case of writers and artists, since earnings are so meager for the vast majority.

People carry medicine and gift for the culture that is badly needed, as Francis Weller has written. But a lot of that potential remains untapped because of the demands of compulsory employment.

Most of the time the same applies for every professional-level skills individual.
