Rodri's victory is also the victory of Spaniards and midfielders. Can you imagine, for 64 years, no Spaniard has won the Golden Ball. A drought longer than what the English have faced during major tournaments. The years Spanish footballers along with the national team shone bright, yet none were recognized. Not even Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol or Raul. But now Rodri. In 69 years, the Golden Ball has been awarded for only the tenth time to a midfielder, and in the 21st century, it is only the third time. It is unfairly little for such an important position, with midfielders-particularly controlling defensive midfielders-being the very embodiment of football-let me remind you-a team sport. The third point of reward is that Rodri was one of the best in this season 2022/23; he deserved such an award even then.

Rodri's win is a huge moment, breaking the long wait for Spanish players! It's about time midfielders got their dues, especially those pivotal in controlling and shaping the game like Rodri. Truly well-deserved recognition! 👏
