Before there were demos there was Doug Engelbart.

You're all obsessed with Jobs, yet this man demonstrated PCs, the Internet, hypertext, video, the mouse, real-time collaboration and more in the 1960s. He foresaw and built a future of computing that has lasted 60 years.

By comparison most things that get demoed today are trivial, unimaginative and outdated in 2 years. 

That's why it's still the Mother of all Demos.
