College is helpful for career if:

1. You major in something with hard skills
2. In the US, you got to a school that gives you an initial professional network

But after your first or second job, most places just care about what you've done at the previous job (or built on your own).

very true. no one cared about where I studied when I was working or doing my own thing

only seems to matter in academia itself or maybe raising out of university - didn’t realise till I got here how many funds there are that only engage with mit/harvard grads
