Apparently he'd ask candidates to determine the internal volume of the bulb. If they started taking measurements & writing down calculations they were disqualified. Any guesses what the candidates needed to do to pass the test?

submerge the bulb in water, measure displacement, break it underwater, then measure change in displacement

that gets the internal volume excluding solid components (i.e filament) which I assume is the desired quantity
