Success Topic of the Day: Learning to say No How do you decide when to say no to something? Is it tough for you, or does it help you stay focused and get shit done? I am a people pleaser and I have always struggled to advocate for myself. Learning to say No has been a really powerful way to take back my time. What about you?

This is by far one of the things I have to coach people on the most. Most of the time, it's how to recognize burnout and when you have too much on your plate. The how to have the conversation with your manager about workload and how to successfully complete. And on the flipside how to accept that answer and prioritize.

if you're feeling burned out, how would you approach that conversation with your manager? In the past I've tried to have that discussion but haven't gotten very far and it really only got worse.

It depends on if your manager is receptive to the conversation. How have you approached it in the past? Do you have the same workload as your peers? What are the expectations?

My previous position I didn’t have any direct peers but had peers that were in a different field and they didn’t as large of a workload. I usually approach it by suggesting I don’t have enough time to tackle the work efficiently and effectively and ask if there’s plans to hire additional headcount. My current role I do have a direct peer and he’s just as busy and the leadership has at least been helpful in cutting a lot of our projects but once they do that they just give us more work so it’s hard to keep up. I’m not at the point of burnout yet but I could get there if our expectation is to juggle a juggle a large workload with a lot of high priority projects
