Season 2 of Severance reminds me of so many modern movies. 

Immaculately shot, you can tell the director falls in love with how good things look and these shots, they linger and linger and then an hour has gone by and nothing has really happened.

1000% agree and think this is similar to musicians relying on excessive production to compensate for weak lyrics

Generally, a song can only be as good as its harmony, melody, rhythm and lyrics.
However, since the Beatles, it's fair to say that production and recording techniques also play a big role in making a song great.
My thoughts are - production can make a good song great, but can also act as a crutch if the product underneath is not up to standard.
This is a very difficult thing, that producers and artists will spend decades figuring out - including myself.

Weak lyrics, weak songwriting chops. Same thing happened with the rise of digital recording, everyone thought it’d democratize recording music but instead it just ruined a craft.
