A thread of some of my favorites over the last few months. Guess I've been on a historical fiction & sci-fi kick. The Oligarch's Daughter by Joseph Finder. 4.5/5 NY finance guy falls in love with Russian oligarch's daughter (he doesn't know who she is at first) and gets caught up in the mess -- changing identities and running for his life. Book jumps right in, no waiting 100 pages for it to take flight. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/212421071-the-oligarch-s-daughter

The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch 4.5/5 This is described as 'Inception meets True Detective,' and I'd only add a touch of Interstellar to that. It's a complete mind-warp that had me trying to keep up the whole time. There are moments of extreme violence, but they will leave you guessing until the end. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33413556-the-gone-world

The Heart in Winter by Kevin Barry 4/5 A late-1800s Western of two young kids (Tom and Polly) on the run after he convinces her to leave her husband-to-be and head to San Francisco with him. Funny, tragic, and well-written. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/199795387-the-heart-in-winter

The Man From St. Petersburg by Ken Follett 4/5 In the lead up to WWI, as a young Churchill and co. try to negotiate Russia's involvement on their side, an assassin is tasked with ruining the alliance, only to botch the initial attempt and have everything go pear-shaped from there. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50371995-the-man-from-st-petersburg
