- *ridiculously heavily* skewed towards the earliest users of Farcast
- Why? Because the algorithm starts off by selecting a trusted group of core users based on metrics heavily biased in favor of early users (see https://docs.openrank.com/integrations/farcaster/ranking-strategies-on-farcaster). 
- early users receive multiple boosts to engagement due to similar algorithms being used everywhere (e.g. Power Badge, Degen Tips), which results in a positive feedback loop.

- nearly impossible for users who registered after a certain point to create the mega followings of the earliest users

Why not use first cast or registration date? Dune's Neynar data doesn't have this <= 2023-09. If anybody has an alternative data source I can use on Dune, it would be much appreciated.

It's FID spam. Team is working on it. You need at least 1 unit of storage to post messages to Hubs.

Based on a hint from @artlu, I used the new search "from:" feature in Warpcast to find a high-level explanation. I wonder if the contracts changed, and now you can't register a FID without paying for storage, because we don't see these issues any more? Or people just learned that this would be "burning ETH".

It's possible that the gaps in lower-end FIDs with no activity could be due to changes in contracts that now require payment for storage or because people have realized that registering a FID without paying for storage would result in "burning ETH." It might be worth looking into further to understand the underlying causes behind these gaps. Thank you for the link to the explanation.
