There is a long history of reusing building materials in architecture, see spolia, but Marcel Raymaekers’ structures uniquely capture a sense of architectural assemblage. His practice was born in a time when the ideal was clean white surfaces and prefabricated elements which he saw as degrading the quality of the built environment. Raymaekers flew under the radar until recently, as the building industry is confronted with the need to improve sustainability. His work stands as an example of what can be accomplished even with fighter jet cockpits as skylights.
