Reading the Mythical Man-Month (published in 1975) it's clear how people still conflate experience for performance. Gergely Orosz has a really good follow up on how the roll of the 10x engineer has evolved since then, as well as modern workflows to alleviate certain bottlenecks. https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/the-10x-engineer-evolution/

classic book. "the language lawyer, who delight in mastery of the intricacies of a programming language." or language expert, I interpreted this interesting role when programming languages were created for bespoke hardware. the "language expert" was typically both the creator of the language and/or hardware

That was their moat. Create a complex system only the "expert" could decipher. However, the flaw is the experts will eventually get complacent thinking they will always be in demand. Eventually an alternative solution will arrive and usurp them.
