Let's talk compost in NYC 🌱 1. https://www.nyc.gov/site/dsny/collection/residents/curbside-composting.page - Brown cans you see on the side of some buildings. Read more about it in the FAQ https://www.nyc.gov/site/dsny/collection/residents/curbside-composting-faq.page but it is split between actual compost, the Staten Island Compost Facility to create fertilizer, and some to other facilities to be anaerobically digested to create biogas and fertilizer. Not sure what the %s are and not actually sure what % of the biogas is utilized as energy vs just burning it off to prevent methane release. 2. https://www.nyc.gov/site/dsny/collection/residents/food-scrap-drop-off.page - Smart composting bins that look like mailboxes and most of them require the NYC Compost app to open. You can include meat, bones, dairy, and greasy pizza boxes so who knows how much if any is actually composted. A while back I spoke to someone from ConEd who acknowledged that a lot just gets processed and burned off... Thread 👇

Burning it off is substantially better than letting it rot in a landfill while releasing methane into the atmosphere. And I appreciate that the technology to more effectively turn it into energy will likely improve with time. But it feels like a band-aid solution compared to a more cosmolocal approach. Walking your food scraps to a local dropoff that processes it nearby and is used for local gardens is much more efficient but obviously scaling that can be tough. @regenavocado recently introduced me to MakeSoil https://linktr.ee/makesoil which may be a pretty solid pathway for that more local approach. When I open up the map for nearby dropoffs I see an org that has contributed compost to a local community garden I help occasionally, which feels like a pretty good sign. Would be awesome to slap a web3 incentive structure on top of it one day. Curious if anybody has used the app or anything similar? Would love to hear any thoughts or better info about composting in NYC.
