I’ve fallen deep into the home automation rabbit hole the past few weeks. Some things I’ve set up: - lights turn on when entering a room (via motion detectors) and off when exiting - adaptive lighting adjusts light brightness/color based on time of day - home security arms & all electronics turn off when asleep, based on iPhone focus mode/charging/time of day Home Assistant is extremely powerful (but rocky UX at times)

2 questions. Open source or closed source solutions? Local or online system? I could get behind home automation if no data is leaving the premises. Ain’t no way I’m giving a Google a camera in my house.

home automation is deeply addicting! my start came in late 2017 for a small pet project (pardon the pun) after i wanted to turn on my backyard deck lights when the dog went out. the light switch is outside on my deck, so i used a multipurpose sensor on my sliding glass door to turn on my new zwave light switch. after that, i filled out my entire house with light switches, motion detectors, and in limited areas, bulbs. i still use smartthings as i found home assistant too buggy for daily use. -if you have fans, check out bond it's fantastic for getting them automated if they don't have a single light switch -i also use actiontiles for a great ui on my old ipad (only for smartthings)
