Reading Don Quixote now, and it seems to be, to knight-errantry, what Moby Dick is to whaling, Ulysses is to Dublin, Gravity’s Rainbow is to the military industrial complex, etc. What other novels (eg “encyclopedic novels”) involve this sort of extensive treatment of a topic?
