I’ve been following JD Vance’s career for many years, starting with his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.” I think he is an interesting figure as he represents generational turnover in the American political system. One thing I have noticed of late is that Vance appears to be trying to imitate the style of Donald Trump, particularly through the use of insults and offensive comments intended to build rapport with his base. The problem is that Vance does not have the same charisma and comedic delivery of Trump. Trumpism without humor is simply off-putting and disturbing. This is why other avowedly “Trumpist” candidates like Marjorie Taylor Greene have had such limited appeal. It is also why I believe Trump is essentially irreplaceable. If Vance continues trying to imitate the style of Trump he is going to encounter big problems. His statements about “cat ladies” and so forth just sound callous and mean-spirited. He is better off earnestly being himself and letting the electorate judge him that way.

He comes off as a different person than his memoir, and then again, it's possible that life in politics and experiences could have changed him.
