for reasons i cannot quite understand, i have been thinking about constraints all week. then i remembered that i wrote this essay in praise of constraints two years ago and maybe it's time to revisit the theme? https://thechukwukaosakwe.wordpress.com/2022/09/16/in-praise-of-constraints/

The constraints laid out by the BBC made Top Gear better than The Grand Tour could ever be. Clarkson, Hammond and May brought their usual vibes, somehow an unlimited budget failed to capture the magic of the OG setup

So Clarkson got fired from the BBC for attacking a producer. The other 2 left with him. The BBC is state-run, lots of rules about decorum that extend to language and joke content. But British humour embraces what's not being said as part of the joke, so sometimes it ended up being funnier. But the formula didn't scale up. Bigger events and fancier cars. Each episode would effectively be a special. The jokes lost some of their flair and got more crude, they tried harder to get the big laughs that weren't landing. Still a decent show, but I found myself going back to older episodes of the late 00s.
