one thing Medium has never done well is explain to me why I should get a membership? what is the big value proposition there?

there is an up limit for free reads. if you are bound medium for simple market reach—eg majority of crypto stuff gain better reach there hence good defi stuff almost always have Medium—you end up paying to be able to read others' stuff for your specialty.

I played the Medium game for a while. Membership was for me a logic step for being in the MPP as well. I read a lot ofnpoetrybon medium and knew/assumed my money was going there. But... The big winners on Medium were and probably still are, the mediocre regurgitating of popular POVs. Not anything of serious quality. It was an amazing and groundbreaking tool before memberships and MPP. Substack is on all levels much better. But even they are going walled garden now.
