I agree AND I think there are some fundamental misunderstandings about Netflix’s approach that people try to implement poorly. For instance I have seen people have open vacation policies and then set up their systems so people can never be away. It all starts with a respect for the work that every single individual does for the organization. If that respect exists, I find Netflix’s principles can work, but if it doesn’t then companies are wasting their time.

What do you mean systems where you can never be away?

For instance, if the team can’t make a release while you are away (for technical or authority reasons) then you can never go on vacation. Basically fragile systems. In an environment like that, open vacation is meaningless at best and an outright lie at worst. And yet I see those kinds of companies all the time trying to ape Netflix.
