there's a new paper on studying brain cells that change in aging mice

it says cells around the third ventricle like tanycytes that form the blood brain barrier are most affected by aging

but in the methods section my old labmates and i noticed they harvested cells from another source, under a reverse light/dark cycle 🤔

Sort of tangential, but thanks to Trump Things there has been new debate reawakened about the translatability of animal models at all. This whole thing and QT interesting

Some argue that successful example &lt;you pick&gt; required animal research ergo it's needed. But this argument is flawed for 2 reasons: 
1. Since there are many requirements for animal research, by definition, successful drugs will have done it 
2 The salient q is what are the test…

I've often wondered about this. 

One blog post I really like is about the many many methodological problems w/ animal studies and their poor translation to humans.

i don't get what is being proposed here tho--skip right to humans? :S i presume we still need to do baseline safety work in animals

the other awkward thing is animal models between mice and humans are probably closer to humans on a spectrum, but in western society we are very not-ok with testing on "higher" lifeforms

I thought the issue is more that we have cured cancer in mice a bajillion times but it doesn’t work on humans, more than the other way around (we are missing cures that don’t work on mice but might work on humans)?

So I don’t think the argument about skipping mice is sound, more so we need better models in addition to what’s currently being done

People are finding even mice testing problematic 

I think no solve posited per se more so worth wondering if we do find an alternate way if it’s worth resurrecting failed candidates
