Metaverse never made sense to me except as science fiction. Because you can’t navigate a virtual space by walking (you’ll hit a physical wall in your environment), it’s hosed. And those to whom virtual escapism most appeals are likely also the most physically constrained.

What about those omnidirectional treadmill things? I guess there hasn’t been one that’s priced low enough to be mass-adopted…but physically possible?

This raises the question about having a dedicated space for such a device (or family of devices). But there again, that partially solves the problem but you need even more: force feedback gloves that can restrict motion to simulate touching solidity, a system of pullies to simulate forces on the body, etc, etc.
