It's all about running a lot. Aim for two shorter runs in the week, and a longer run at weekends. Build up gradually, aim towards 18 miles for longer runs. Enjoy the endorphins, and enjoy the heightened levels of energy you will have. Do lots of stretching before and after runs. 6 months is plenty. Start asap.
