I understand your point. I believe that society currently puts a lot of pressure on people to identify with and represent what is expected from their job position. You are your job. You have to be what is expected of your role. This, combined with responsibilities that might not be fully understood, can cause many people to get lost. Indeed, I think part of it is "not having a sufficiently organized and detailed mental model of their work", but also an unrecognized pressure and a lack of personality/character. 
"Be careful what you wish for".

it's a half joke but i actually believe that 50% of the impostor syndrome comes from people not having a sufficiently organized and detailed mental model of their work
