Almost all L1 blockchains use their token inflation entirely for security (s/o /zcash for funding research too) to be maximally credibly neutral

This leaves a gap in funding for research and public goods that L2s, that inherit L1 security, can fill with their tokens

@optimism is choosing to do just that, supporting the ecosystem and public goods with their tokens. Their system isn't perfect yet but it's a step in the right direction
