although i personally think stateless clients are extremely important, it's not obvious that the marginal app dev chooses stateless vs. trusting an RPC (esp. if it requires a little less work) is this wrong?

I agree that makes sense. Potentially stateless nodes can integrated into dev frameworks, similar to how they might be built into wallets. Then they could then benefit from a trustless RPCs relationship without needing to do more work
