I think it’s perfectly fine to tax unrealized gains if I can deduct unrealized losses and carry them forward forever.

will never work unless they eliminate AMT entirely. AMT makes unrealized gains subject to never being offsettable by unrealized losses unless those losses happen above the AMT thresholds. This already happened in Cali in the 90s and was repealed when it imploded.
