It actually is kind of difficult to sum up how to learn how to knit. I think of it kind of like learning how to code, where you back out of something you want. This article from the NYT is pretty good in terms of setting you off https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/smarter-living/how-to-start-knitting.html?unlocked_article_code=1.g04.WY6D.Zdx8BuyxSQBn&smid=url-share I learned to knit from a book called "Stitch and Bitch" and my first ever finished object was this hat. It's knit flat in bulky yarn with both knit and purl stitches, along with color changes and some simple decreasing to shape the crown. You can kick this out quickly and it's very wearable. You can customize it with basically any color and stripe pattern, extend it so there's a rim or even add a pom pom on top. Fit isn't an issue because of the stretchy rib so if you live dangerously you can even YOLO it without a gauge swatch.
