Mars Colonization project was always a grift abusing people's fascination with sci-fi concepts.

The extinction risk posed by human-bound events (e.g climate change, pandemics, nuclear war, rogue AI, etc) is 0.02-0.05% a year, while extinction risk posed by earth-bound events (e.g asteroids, volcanic events, solar flare, etc) is 0.00001-0.0001% a year.

These numbers are highly speculative, but most assumptions will give a similar logical result: Whatever the massive amount of money needed for Mars Colonization, it would justify its investment only after we spend 200x of that amount on climate change risks.

Any mathematical logic says less, but who cares about math, sci-fi is profitable.
