Gaza had 2.3m people before the genocide had started.
For the second time this week, Trump quoted "1.7 million", referring to remaining population in Gaza. I'm guessing this is the number he's briefed on, either by his internal team or by Israel directly.
In July, Lancet had published a calculation based on history: Indirect deaths from city bombing would be ~5x official violent deaths. In the article, they noted that Gaza was a denser city and their estimation of 186,000 killed was conservative.
Since then, violent deaths doubled. Mapping the multiplier to a dense Gaza, Lancet's estimation matches Trump's own number.
This means, according to not just Lancet, but also Trump's team (or potentially Israel directly), Israel killed ~30% of Gaza's population since the beginning of the genocide. 1 reply
