This is the output of an in-camera generative photography system created using the iPhone’s panoramic photography processing.  

The short version is that I feed the system light + movement and when the shot stops I get an image based on those factors. 

The lens is blocked by an object. (Example: Biscuit wrapper)

The sequence and some screen caps. I am in Pasadena at the moment in a cafe. The light is OK. 

I am using the wrapper above
I have the camera held in both hands with the wrapper held in my left hand over the lens. 

I start the shot when I am happy with framing and the processing may or may not care about this detail.

I move to the right as the arrow suggests and I move up and down. I also move the camera against the direction of the arrow while moving in the direction of the arrow. 

When I get outside of what the phone will tolerate the shot stops. Some collaborators on Interlocutor experienced this.

I took one more photo. 

In 2021 and early 2022 I focused pretty heavily just on how interesting the ephemeral patterns could be. These are — in a remote way — the hash for the resulting photo. That excludes the significant impact of movement.

They disappear the moment the capture stops.

This is the setup for one of my favorite jokes. The best is when I get “no shot”. That is exactly what it sounds like. I complete the process and the shot stops and no image is generated. FUN!

But the goal of all of those is to crash the app

And the result of the above sequence is … I made grey. 

Specifically a 194 x 4644 (iPhone pano max image height) image. This happens with some frequency. Perhaps 2-3% but less often than the “no shot”.

I committed to name the color after people on farcaster so I think we know what this one is called.

The iPhone processes the shot as it would any other panorama. But it is not a simple photostitching algorithm now so depth and movement data appear to be part of the process. 

And the iPhone is a digital camera so there are some differences. Color is a construct. The iPhone interprets color and so black may be blue.
