I'm not going to sell this very hard. The series is going to be for members only. It's just enough to make sense of the Asian businesses and situations that's going to come up when we start talking about tycoons. This will end after three instalments.

People with power don't talk about power. People who don't have power do. This week's Commoncog piece is the start of a mini-series on power, as a setup for the Asian conglomerates series very soon. A couple of quick notes below ...

NOOOOO! It’s really not that great! The best banh mi I’ve had so far is https://maps.app.goo.gl/zPGYHr5ynnDLguEG7?g_st=ic Source: I spend a lot of time at GWC, and I lived in Saigon for 5 years.

For a brief, horrific moment, I thought this was a young Steve Jobs.

The Charlie Munger version of this is much better, of course: “The idea that life is a series of adversities and that each one is an opportunity to behave well instead of badly is a very good idea. And it works so well in old age because you get so many adversities you can’t fix.”

I know this is quite obvious, but it bears repeating: how you react to tragedy and challenge is very revealing of character.

Every time I write a book summary I find that I hate myself. This week's Commoncog post is a free summary. It also took two weeks.

Reminisces of a Stock Operator is remarkable, and should be read by any observer of the crypto markets. The final chapters on how to do stock manipulation is 👨‍🍳😘 You cannot help but see manipulation everywhere afterwards!

Excellent observation. I had not noticed the oh-so-subtle drift over the past year or so. The sideways market must really be getting to people.

Ostensibly it’s a metrics review meeting. In practice it’s a mechanism for operational excellence: https://commoncog.com/the-amazon-weekly-business-review/

Went on a data podcast yesterday, and the host said something pretty sharp about the Amazon-style Weekly Business Review: “I can’t imagine most executives want to subject themselves to that kind of pressure.” Something something not very founder mode. 🤔

From a group chat: “I don’t know why South East Asia is so often seen as a backwater. We have Nasi Lemak. From the perspective of Nasi Lemak, the entire West is a backwater.”
