i like to build a lot of physical tactility into my layouts — multiple switch types, tall keys, short keys, slanted keys, textured keys; anything that can differentiate logical or physical groupings on the board, or acts as an assist in locating my hands in place
e.g. there are actually MX Browns under the number row in this board. they clack noticeably more than the Zilent, so misclicks give a "feedback" response, and i can know I got the wrong key even if I'm not watching the screen, because it both feels and sounds different
here, left thumb does a lot of layer switching and chording, so maximum distinction is beneficial. i don't think that's even ESC, it was just an available keycap that was both physically distinct and shaped to stay out of the way while i'm pressing LWR
but right thumb only handles the space bar, so the front teeth of that thumb cluster get to be straight instead of crooked 😄 0 reply
