Are you more of an ideological free software activist or a practical open source advocate?

Why not both? I think there's still room for even more viral open source licenses — AGPL isn't extreme enough, there should be a license capable of causing license infection such that anything it is even proxies by is forced to become open source.

It’s possible to be both but there are cases where the extreme ends of the spectrum are in tension or would likely come to different conclusions E.g. if proprietary software is evil no compromise is justified

Primarily my contention with proprietary software is in corporate grifters, like Amazon, who resells open source projects as a service and never contributes back the code that makes these services cloud-ready (and in some cases not even the improvements to the projects themselves) But if I have to choose a side, consider me Richard Stallman in lipstick and a dress.
