For others, utopia is an island flowing with milk and honey with communal property, religious tolerance, and equality for all. For me, utopia is an Internet with no NAT devices so peer-to-peer protocols could function the way God intended.

NAT isn't the only thing that makes p2p protos have a hard time, but it certainly is up there in the list of "it's probably X" in diagnostics

What else is on your list of things that make p2p protos have a hard time? I suspect scaling private groups is one?
