Introduction to Vinyl | How to distinguish the authenticity of vinyl 01 Practical knowledge! In the previous issues, we introduced some little-known facts about vinyl records, and many vinyl friends also raised some interesting questions. So today, let’s talk about my personal method of distinguishing the authenticity of vinyl records. Check the surface of the record Normal vinyl records basically use light to shine obliquely, and you can see the marks on the record. Second-hand records basically have some tiny scratches, some of which will not affect the playback, because sometimes after the record ends, there will be a few seconds when the needle will not automatically lift, which may cause some scratches. Some scratches may also be caused by damage to the tonearm. This kind of scratch is basically invisible without light. If the scratches or dirt can be seen by the naked eye, you should pay attention to it. The dirt may be cleaned, but the scratches are permanent.

Introduction to Vinyl | How to distinguish the authenticity of vinyl records 02 Let's talk about how I personally distinguish the authenticity of vinyl records. 2. Record cover The record cover is also a basis for judging authenticity. In addition to checking the record company, you should also check the preservation of the cover when you get the vinyl, except for new records. For example, I like to collect second-hand old Hong Kong and Taiwan records, so I pay attention to the degree of damage to the cover. For second-hand records, the better the cover is preserved, the higher the collection value, but the problem of fake cover cannot be ruled out. Of course, this rarely happens with old records, or I may be lucky and have not encountered it. The cover will generally decay and age over time, but this degree of decay and artificial aging are very obvious.

Record company A regular disc will be printed with the manufacturer, distribution company, etc. These companies will also print their own unique serial number or serial code on the cover of the record. You can also check on the official website of the record company. Basically, you can find it. However, some older record companies, such as PolyGram, a record company from the last century, have very few fake vinyl records.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl 05 Is vinyl the highest level of listening to music? No, vinyl cannot be used as a way to judge the level of music. It can only be said that vinyl music is a form of music playback, which cannot make people high-level, but this kind of thing has feelings, and it has a feeling of returning to the past or moving forward to the future, that's all, and you must consume rationally and don't blindly follow the trend. —

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl 04 What are rips and first editions? First of all, we have to say that rips are all genuine as long as they are officially released. This means that they must be officially authorized. Rip refers to obtaining copyright through official channels, re-recording the master tape on the basis of a new record company and making a new vinyl record. The first edition refers to the master tape version recorded at the time of release. The difference between rips and first editions is actually very large. The original version is closer to that era, more authentic, and more expensive.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl 03 Chinese Classic Records and Foreign Classic Records? Chinese classic old records are basically overpriced, and the price is still rising. Foreign records are more normal and affordable because the popularity of records abroad is much higher than in China. Currently, only a small number of people in China listen to them, and even fewer professional collectors, but there are a large number of people abroad, so vinyl records are relatively affordable.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl | 02 Are there real and fake records? Actually, there is no need to worry too much about this issue, because the manufacturing process of vinyl itself is complicated and the cost is very high. If you can make a fake vinyl that is close to the original, you can basically set up a professional record company. Of course, there are fake vinyls, but they usually appear in those sky-high records, such as Leslie Cheung's color vinyls and some of Teresa Teng's very rare vinyls, which are very precious. It is also because of the serious premium of these vinyls that this situation will occur. Under normal circumstances, it basically does not exist.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl | 05 Is it really troublesome to buy a record player? It is very troublesome at the beginning, because you need to adjust various parameters, such as tonearm, needle pressure, speed, etc. Some record players do not need to be adjusted and can be used directly after purchase, which is also more friendly for novices. But if you are an enthusiast who pursues the ultimate sound quality, then trouble is inevitable.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl | 04 How to choose between color records and black records? The sound quality of color records and black records is exactly the same. They are both simulated recordings in the same environment. However, color records pursue the beauty of records. The entire record is more artistic and more like a work of art. They are often sold in limited quantities. However, compared with the lifespan, black records have a much longer lifespan than color records and can be played for a longer time.

Introduction to Vinyl | Must-know Trivia about Vinyl | 02 How often should the needle of a record player be replaced? This generally depends on how long you play records. Generally, each needle has a service life. When the needle is old or not well maintained, the sound quality often has obvious cracking points and hoarse sounds. The life of a needle is difficult to judge. Some needles have been used for more than ten years and the effect is still very good. As long as they are well maintained and not deliberately damaged, they can be used continuously. And sometimes, if the record cannot be played, it is not necessarily due to the needle.

Let's continue with the little-known facts in the last issue, ok little notes! What is the rotation speed of a record? The rotation speed refers to how many times the record rotates in one minute. Different rotation speeds have different recording densities, and the sound quality is also different. Currently, the most popular vinyl record on the market is 33 rpm, which can record more details of the sound groove.

Tips for getting started! How much "noise" does vinyl have❓| 04 7. Low-frequency noise: Also known as "bottom noise", it refers to the low-frequency noise generated by factors such as the friction between the stylus and the record surface and the interference of the power line when playing a vinyl record. These noises are usually below 30Hz and are difficult for human ears to detect. The bottom noise will affect the sound quality of the vinyl record, making the sound more fuzzy and distorted, which is an unsatisfactory problem for audiophiles who pursue high-quality music. Bean sounds, bottom noise, popping sounds, and off-voice sounds are all the sound quality performances presented by vinyl records.

Tips for getting started! How much "noise" does vinyl have❓| 03 1. Background noise: Due to the noise of the record player, amplifier and other equipment, as well as the interference of the surrounding environment, some background noise or noise may occur when the record is played. 2. Repeated needle skipping: Some parts of the vinyl record may be repeatedly swept by the needle, causing the music to be played repeatedly or incoherently. It should be noted that insufficient needle pressure, poor equipment installation position, damage or bending of the record surface can cause repeated needle skipping.

Tips for getting started! How much "noise" does vinyl have❓| 02 1. Popping: When the intensity of the sound waves on the record exceeds the range that the record player, amplifier and other equipment can withstand, a noise similar to the explosion sound will be produced, which is called popping. 2. Crackling: When there are scratches, wear and tear on the record, the needle will make a sound similar to the jumping of electric sparks when it sweeps over these grooves, which is called crackling. 3. Detuning: When the record player speed is unstable, the needle is damaged or abnormal, etc., it will cause the notes on the record to change pitch or skip certain parts, which is called detuning.

Tips for getting started! How much "noise" does vinyl have❓| 01 Friends who often play vinyl will encounter some problems with "noise". Some "noise" presents a natural and real feeling that cannot be simulated by digital music. 1. "Fried beans sound": The noise generated when the stylus sweeps through the record groove is mainly caused by the friction between the stylus and the record groove. At the same time, it is also affected by factors such as record materials and production processes. Some audiophiles believe that although the "fried beans sound" is not perfect sound quality, it can increase the realism and musical atmosphere of the record, especially when listening to classical music or jazz. 2. Explosion: When the intensity of the sound waves on the record exceeds the range that the record player, amplifier and other equipment can withstand, a noise similar to the explosion sound will be generated, which is called explosion.
