@saymore so does that mean it IS better for user attention, but making content better is a longer term fix or do you mean something else?

first, it's a shortcut/trick, hence more likely to have negative consequences after the user realizes their subconscious quality/relevance signals misfired.

second, it's a crutch for the designer to be flashy rather than focused on delivering the message

If the content was good would the "trick" turn into something useful for the reader?

possibly yes, but it's risky
