@saymore so does that mean it IS better for user attention, but making content better is a longer term fix or do you mean something else?

first, it's a shortcut/trick, hence more likely to have negative consequences after the user realizes their subconscious quality/relevance signals misfired. second, it's a crutch for the designer to be flashy rather than focused on delivering the message
