Mostly true! However, I lost interest in games when most of them turned from a finite goal ("finish the game") to an infinite one (prob WoW was the first one), which to me seemed like an unbounded time I'd be spending on a game.

It's not really the single vs multiplayer games but more of finite vs infinite games. From an industry POV, infinite games with in-game purchases skyrocketed the industry. But there is no more the concept "I finished Quake".
